Abstract:
The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) code is internationally used for
identifying the title of serial publications. This research aims at determining the error
detection and correction capabilities of the International Standard Serial Number code
against the dictionary size. ISSN code has a relatively small dictionary size and is not
effective in error detection and correction capabilities. The study develops a modified
International Serial Number code and determines its error detection and correction
capabilities against its dictionary size. The study utilizes weight checksum technique to
detect and correct error(s). Moreover, the study designs an algorithm for conversion of
ISSN code words to the modified ISSN code words. The total number of code words is
established by how many digits permute. Modified ISSN code is effective in error
detection and correction capabilities for it has dual mechanism for detection and
correction of errors, if the weight checksum equation does not hold and if the conditions
for the generating equation does not hold.
