Abstract:
This study aimed at establishing the relationship between organizational climate dimensions and organizational performance in National Referral hospitals in Kenya. Specifically, the study intended to establish the relationship between human relations, internal processes, open systems, rational goals and organisational performance in National referal hospitals in Kenya. Guided by the philosophy of logical positivism, a mixed design involving quantitative and qualitative designs was used to obtain information from sample of 746 drawn from a population of 2961 health workers from the two National referral hospitals in Kenya namely, Kenyatta National Hospital and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The health personnel were classified as doctors, pharmacists, nurses, clinical officers and public health officers. Primary data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. A pilot test was carried out to obtain some assessment of the question’s validity and the likely reliability. This was tested using Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha. Data was analyzed using SPSS and to test the hypotheses of the study, t and F tests were used. Correlation and regression analysis were carried out to determine the relationships between the variables used. The results provided statistical evidence that a positive and significant influence exists between Organizational Climate Dimensions and performance of the National Referral Hospitals in Kenya. Specifically, all the climate dimensions tested in this study were found to have significant and positive influence on the performance of National Referral Hospitals. These dimensions were human relations, internal processes, open systems, rational goals. The study however found out that Open systems had the least effect on the performance of national referral hospitals in Kenya while internal processes had the greatest effect on the performance of national referral hospitals in Kenya. In the practice, this study recommends that the National Referral Hospitals in Kenya should work towards having a more positive and supportive work climate as this has a significant influence on performance.
